ISO 20022: End of formats coexistence for payment messages
The migration to the ISO 20022 format for interbank payments, which began in March 2023 with priority given to payment instructions, is proceeding according to plan.
Although the Fedwire migration, initially planned for April 2025, has been postponed to July 14, 2025, the transition has been a success. The next step is the end of the coexistence period (ISO20022-MT) for payments (MT102, 102 STP, 103 REMIT, 203, etc.) on November 22, 2025. At this stage, no delay is anticipated.
The same implementation date will apply to other elements such as the use of hybrid postal addresses, i.e., addresses that allow the simultaneous use of structured elements, some of which will be mandatory (e.g., city and country names), and unstructured elements. Unstructured addresses will be banned in November 2026.
In addition, a one-year delay has been scheduled for certain specific messages, such as MT199 used for “exceptions and investigations”: these will be replaced by CAMT110 and 111.
Other MT messages will be gradually removed from service until November 2028. A few marginal residues will then remain in place until further notice.
